![]() oh look MTV has been moved recently, pity VIVA couldn't be moved along side it as it does pretty much the same thing! (but apart from the programmes are shifted to early afternoon) they might as well be completely rebranded and "shifted" from the Music section. The need for it will be very limited and is diminishing all the time. ![]() Music TV will be gone in the not too distant future. Youtube is fine if you know what you're looking for and the material is actually there in good quality, but it just isn't a substitute for a carefully programmed edition of 120 Minutes or Chill Out Zone or whatever. Once that unpredictability went and you could tell what would be coming up next there really wasn't much point anymore. The unpredictability and lack of set playlist was the real excitement for me of watching high quality music television. ![]() This is not a feeling I get with Youtube or today's MTV UK. MTV's most loyal viewers were probably those who watched these alternative shows, often for the suspense of not quite knowing what might be coming up next. Part of the reason for dropping them was probably the time it took to programme them. Of course music policy from management does have an effect too, this was best represented by the decision to drop all specialist slots from the channels over four years ago now. I have a contact in the industry who says it would be impossible for one person to programme an entire channel for a week from scratch (without use of repeated countdowns, programmes etc), let alone two. I'm just suggesting they haven't the time. Having followed these channels for well over a decade they used to be a lot better and it is clear what they are capable of. There is no doubting the programmer's ability. The rubbish themed charts and small playlists are more likely down to orders from MTV management (mainly accountants rather than music fans). The person who runs MTV Base and VH1 has worked for MTV for well over a decade and has a long history in the music industry.
